Who are the IWGB Private Hire Drivers?
The IWGB (Independent Workers of Great Britain) is a trade union leading the fight for change in the private hire industry. We are a group of drivers who work on apps including Uber, Bolt, and Addison Lee, taking action to build a sector where our jobs are secure, our safety is protected, and our pay is fair.
One driver acting alone can do very little to stop the apps taking a 50% commission, deactivating their account, or refusing them sick pay. But when enough drivers commit to taking action at the same time, we have the power to change all these things and more.
Many other workers in the transport sector, including black cab drivers and train drivers, have won higher pay and better conditions because they built strong trade unions with enough members to pressure employers and regulators. It’s time for private hire drivers to do the same.
We have already proved what is possible when drivers unite. In 2024, we won our campaign to end unfair surveillance of Addison Lee drivers. On Valentine’s Day 2025, we organised the UK’s biggest ever driver log off. In summer 2025, we successfully fought to end TfL’s licensing delays, and this autumn we are taking TfL to court for an unprecedented legal action that could overhaul London’s licensing system and pave the way for widespread compensation.

The History of the IWGB Private Hire Drivers
We are part of the IWGB Union
Our drivers’ union is a branch of The Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB), a bold and dynamic union which represents mainly low paid migrant workers. That includes workers in the gig economy, like private hire drivers and food delivery couriers, outsourced workers like cleaners and security guards, and workers in other sectors like foster carers, charity workers and game workers.
The IWGB specialises in representing sections of the workforce which have traditionally been non-unionised and under-represented.
